Hi!
So we made the epic 14 hour journey from Ushuaia to Puerto Arenas on the 'Direct' service (i.e. only one changeover!). To be honest we'd both been dreading such a journey but it turned out to be not as bad as we'd thought. I hadn't realised that so much of that particular journey would be flat. Anyway, there was still much to see not least the guanacos, the rheas and the flamingoes.
we arrived just after dark (about 10.30) and found the accommodation quite easily. Lil-Patagonicos was our first 'hostel' on the trip so we were a bit wary, being a patr of oldies and such like. We didn't really see much as we just went straight to bed after establishing that breakfast was available until 10.30 - very civilised!
We had decided to have a sleep and so the breakfast time fitted our plans.
what we hadn't known was that it was self-service breakfast and as we were the last to get up there hardly any left -not a great start! Anyway... being a bit more compos mentis we had a quick exploration of, first the accommodation and then the town.
The hostel was a mix of dorms and private rooms, had a good kitchen and lots of social space. It also had Wi-Fi in the rooms - something we were now considering as essential to our choices of accommodation
The town was a typical 'traveller' town. For every 4 buildings, 1 was a place to eat, the second was a hostel and the third a travel agent/tour company. It has low-rise buildings, is a little rustic in places and has a great atmosphere. it was the first time Gary had felt really excited. - the trip starts here!
