adventures

Hi!
First of all, if anyone reading this ever comes to Patagonia then Puerto Natales is a must visit area. The town itself is great - lots to do/see etc. but is has a fantastically relaxing charm about it (we'd also like to plug Lili-Patagonicos as a place to stay). The tragedy for us is that, in our haste to keep going to cover as much gound as possible, we only booked for 3 days and booked trips for two of those! The town is right on the lake and the lake is surrounded by snowy peaks.
Day 2 was our 2nd big day to look forward to (after the penguins)- a trip to Torres del Paine a massif (allegedly) independent of the Andes but created by volcanic activity involving plugs of magma solidifying before being covered by sedimentation, then folded before being glaciated and exposed (igneous extrusions !!!!)
The trip itself included a stop at the cave of the milodon, as made famous (in our parts) by Bruce Chatwin,
Anne suddenly beams down to the cave and surprises the milodon

Basically this was a typical cave, like you'd find in the Peak District but it has become part of the identity of the area. Hence, there are images all over Puerto Natales of the milodon.

Beyond the cave was where it became exciting

A bit of over-exposure in the photos but they give a little idea of what we were seeing. With the peaks, the lakes and the fire trees, Anne thinks it's one of the most beautiful places she'sever been to!

After spending a lot of time looking in awe at our surroundings (which I'm afraid to say the photos don't do justice to) we pressed on to look, at a distance, at the receding glacier above Lago Grey. It had receded so much that it was difficult to see but we did get our first glimpse of icebergs!!

There are a couple of photos of the glacier but not worth seeing in tens of the glacier itself but it is interesting to see how far it has receded
There is now a long plain of grey sand where it used to be,

and finally... some guanacos - not all of which turned their backsides towards me when I took their photos.

The next day was not quite as exciting buft involved a boat trip around the lake (can't remember its name but it was big) calling at a couple of glaciers on the way.

gary sits on a big piece of ice

and so we ended our short visit to Chile having really enjoyed Puerto Natales. back to Argentina in the morning.
