Valdivia - students and sea lions (or.. going back up)

Valdivia is a great place to go. First of all, it is a student city, being the home of Universidad Chile Austral. There are students everywhere, even more so while we were there as their was some kind of conference/congress going on at the university.
It's a place I could stay. The city is is built on the confluence of four rivers and the main stretch of river runs through/past the city centre. It is another location with evidence of Germanic influence as seen in the architecture and the cakes but also the Kunstmann brewery is here! All over town students can be seen clinking schopp grandes. It has a great feel to it - quite laid back and not really influenced by turism in any way. Yet it would be an ideal place to develop the tourism industry if you like those little timbered German towns/villages. However, the place prospers without having to consider this too much.

It is also the home of a really cool eating place with the title 'Ultima Frontera'  (final frontier). We had quite a few meals, beers and cake there (we are not losing weight for some reason!).

where many have gone before

but its only a sandwich between meals!

It's a place for romantic couples to bask in the sun by the river

Ah yes, the big attraction in Valdivia is SEA LIONS or sea wolves as they call them here. We did know of their existence but they still took us by surprise. We expected to see a few heads bobbing around in the river, briefly taking the air as they passed through. Not so as it seems about 20 of them have taken up residence on the section that passes by the centre. The crucial point as to why they are there is the fish market, that and a couple of pontoons moored just away from the riverside path. It's possible that more photos are taken of them than anything else in the city - it was certainly true in our case.

Ooh! Just there!

"move over darling"

Aaah!

There were a few other species of creature hanging around that particular bit of waterfront. In fact, I managed to photograph so many more creatures in the middle of that city than I did in the nature reserve
